The story of Wild Turkey Longbranch
Wild Turkey Longbranch was announced on 10 April 2018 in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, as a collaboration between master distiller Eddie Russell and the actor Matthew McConaughey, the brand's creative director. It was the first Wild Turkey to carry the signature of anyone other than Eddie or his father Jimmy Russell.
The base is eight year old Wild Turkey bourbon, a small batch Kentucky straight bourbon. What sets it apart from the rest of the range is the filtering. It goes through charcoal twice, first from American white oak and then from Texas mesquite, a wood McConaughey offered from his home state. The mesquite adds a smoky sweetness.
In the glass it is bright gold. The aroma is vanilla and spice, the palate runs through caramel, pear and a hint of citrus, and the finish is subtly smoky and buttery smooth, with gentle pepper and toasted oak.
Eddie Russell says it is a bourbon he enjoys drinking neat, and that is the plainest way to meet the mesquite. For a mixed drink, a stirred Old Fashioned keeps the pear and caramel in play, and the smoky edge sits comfortably beside char grilled steak or ribs.
