The story of 19 Crimes CabSauv

Cabernet Sauvignon was the first wine 19 Crimes ever released, when the brand debuted in 2012. It belongs to Treasury Wine Estates, the Melbourne company, and this is the bottle that started it.

The name looks back to 1787, when Britain began transporting convicts to Australia. Anyone found guilty of one of 19 offences could be sent there instead of being executed, and each cork carries one of those crimes, among them stealing fish and impersonating an Egyptian. The labels show convicts in portrait style, and a phone app makes them move and tell their stories.

The wine itself is a full bodied Australian Cabernet with a soft, smooth side. Dark cherry, red currant and blackcurrant lead the palate, with mocha, chocolate and a sweet touch of vanilla from the oak. The tannins are soft and the finish carries a little spice.

It is easy to pair. Slow cooked lamb shanks, barbecue ribs, a grilled burger or a piece of aged cheddar will all stand up to it.
