The story of A Growers Touch Durif
A Growers Touch Durif comes from Mino & Co, a family winery at Hanwood in the Riverina of New South Wales. The Guglielmino family founded it in 1997 and three generations now work in the business, with Sam Trimboli as winemaker. A Growers Touch is the label for traditional varieties made with local growers, and a photograph of the farmer behind the fruit sits on the front and back of the bottle.
Durif is named for François Durif, a French botanist who kept a vine nursery at Tullins in the 1860s. It is a cross of Peloursin with pollen from Syrah, and it was named in 1868. In Australia the old plantings at Rutherglen in Victoria are still used for popular wine, and the grape later spread to the Riverina and Riverland. The berries are small, with plenty of skin for little juice, so the wine is inky and strongly tannic. This one shows deep plum and blackberry with firm structure, full bodied and intense.
It wants hearty food: grilled red meat, a slow-cooked stew, rich pasta or a hard mature cheese.
