The story of Akarua Siren Pinot Noir

The Siren is Akarua's top Pinot Noir, a single site wine from the estate's vineyard on Cairnmuir Road at Bannockburn in Central Otago. Akarua means two vines in te reo Māori, a reference to the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay planted first. The slopes face gently north west, taking the sun through the hottest hours, while a westerly wind through the rows reduces disease and frost risk.

It is made as a special cuvée rather than a standard release. Barrels are tasted one by one and only the best are blended, then matured in aged French oak. A strict selection of this kind is what gives the wine its concentration and structure.

Expect dark cherry, red plum, violet and lavender, with dried herbs, a hint of truffle and a smooth French oak vanilla. The tannins are fine and grainy and the finish long. Past vintages have been wines to cellar for seven or eight years, though a young bottle is rewarded by a decant of 35 to 45 minutes and a cool room temperature serve, around 16 to 17 degrees. Slow cooked lamb shoulder with saffron suits it.
