The story of Burn Cottage PinotN

Burn Cottage Vineyard Pinot Noir comes from the estate's home vineyard at Lowburn in Central Otago, a sheltered, north east facing amphitheatre in the foothills of the Pisa Range. The first blocks went into the ground in 2003 and have been farmed biodynamically since the start. Ted Lemon of Littorai, in California, was chosen to plant the vineyard and is now head winemaker and vineyard manager.

Pinot Noir covers the north and north east slopes, and each block has its own mix of clones and rootstocks. The soils are free-draining sandy loams, broken down from schist and granite, on old river beds pushed up by glacial movement. Bunches are picked by hand and sorted twice, once at the vine and once at the winery door. Native yeasts run the ferment, which mixes whole bunches with destemmed berries and lasts 17 to 22 days. The wine ages for 11 to 13 months in French oak barriques, usually 20 to 25 per cent of them new.

The result is dark cherry, violets and bright florals with earthy, flinty mineral tones and a savoury edge. Tannins are fine and sinewy, with real length, and it will cellar for ten years or more. Venison, slow cooked lamb shoulder or mushrooms on toast suit it.
