The story of Astrolabe SauvB
Simon Waghorn, a career winemaker, started the Astrolabe label in 1996 with his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn. He took the name from L'Astrolabe, the ship in which the French explorer Dumont d'Urville charted the Marlborough coast in 1827. An astrolabe is an old navigation instrument, and the word translates as star-taker. The business is still family-owned, and their daughters Libby and Arabella now work in it.
All the fruit comes from ten grower families who farm their own land, and many of the relationships go back more than twenty years. This Sauvignon Blanc is a blend of three Marlborough sub-regions, the Wairau Valley, the Awatere Valley and the Kēkerengū Coast, and Waghorn balances them to get a dry, expressive wine.
Gooseberry and white currant lead the nose, with passionfruit and lime peel. The palate adds makrut lime and lemongrass, and the finish is dry and persistent.
It suits crisp leafy salads, seafood of most kinds, and any dish with bright, fragrant herbs. Serve it cold.
