The wine is rich, but remains finely structured and beautifully balanced. Pinot Gris from the Lismore block always achieves optimum flavours later in the season. As a result,the grapes are pickedrelatively late to achieve a wine closer to the richer style of Pinot Gris made famous in the Alsace region of France, rather than the leaner, generally bone-dry 'Pinot Grigio' version, popular in the north of Italy.

The story of Ata Rangi Lismore PinotG

Ata Rangi's Pinot Gris began with a nod to Alsace and has grown into its own Martinborough style. The fruit comes from the Lismore and Walnut Ridge vineyards, with vines now well over twenty years old. Helen Masters has made the Ata Rangi wines since 2003.

The grapes are picked by hand and whole bunch pressed, and the juice goes to large neutral barrels with little settling. It ferments spontaneously with native yeast and stays on its lees for around six months. There is no malolactic fermentation, so the acidity stays fresh against the weight the barrels add.

In the glass it is perfumed, with pear, lychee and citrus, then rose and jasmine, and a palate of nutmeg and ginger. The texture is salivating, and a wet stone note runs through the finish. The winery says it rewards a few years in bottle.

Its weight and spice suit dishes with some heat, such as a Thai green curry or a roast pork loin with apple, and it is fragrant enough to pour as an aperitif beforehand.
