Blackberry · pepper · smooth finish
A smooth and approachable Syrah offering ripe blackberry flavours, gentle spice, and soft tannins for easy drinking.
Beach House is a boutique, family-owned winery in Hawke's Bay, with a first vintage in 1996 and a cellar door at Te Awanga built in 2000. The winery itself sits on its Gimblett Gravels vineyard, where Syrah is grown alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Montepulciano and Chardonnay.
Gimblett Gravels is one of the few wine districts defined by a soil type rather than a line on a map. It follows the Omahu Gravels, a layer of stony soil covering around 800 hectares of Hawke's Bay, and growers must have vineyards on that gravel to belong to its winegrowers association.
Beach House makes its Gimblett Gravels Syrah by hand. Fermentation is in open-topped tanks, with regular plunging and pumping over to draw out colour and flavour, and the wine then goes into French oak for about a year. The result is a Hawke's Bay Syrah with dark berry fruit, black pepper and warm spice, and a mouth-filling palate.
Pour it with lamb, a peppered steak or a slow-cooked winter casserole.
