The story of Black Barn Chard

Black Barn was founded in 1994 by Andy Coltart and Kim Thorp on the hills above Havelock North, and Chardonnay has become its most awarded wine. The vines face north on the slopes beside Te Mata Peak, inside a zone the regional council protected from subdivision in 1996, which makes it New Zealand's first legally protected wine-growing area.

Winemaker Dave McKee has led the cellar for more than twenty vintages, working to a house style of restraint, fruit purity and balance rather than heavy extraction or a lot of oak. Fruit is hand-harvested in several picks, so each block comes in at its own ripeness.

In the glass this Chardonnay is crisp, medium-bodied and elegant. Citrus and grapefruit lead, with white peach behind and a struck flint note, and the finish is long and fine. It is a Hawke's Bay Chardonnay on the fresher side.

Serve it chilled with oysters, pan-fried fish with lemon butter, or a chicken salad with avocado.
