The story of Black Magic Spiced Rum

Black Magic is a spiced rum brand owned by Sazerac, the privately held American spirits company that is owned by William Goldring and his family. Sazerac also runs the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, and Black Magic sits among its rum brands.

It is a blend of light and dark rums finished with a proprietary recipe of spices, and this 700ml bottle is 40% ABV. The colour is very dark. On the nose there is vanilla, brown sugar and sweet baking spice. The palate leans on cinnamon and clove over a sweet, slightly oaky base, and the finish carries vanilla and brown sugar for a good while.

It is a sweet style of spiced rum, so it suits mixing. The classic is rum and cola over plenty of ice, and it also makes a good Dark 'n' Stormy with ginger beer. Drinking it neat over ice works too, as a slow pour rather than a quick shot.
