The story of Black Tears Spiced Rum

Black Tears is a spiced rum made in Cuba, at a factory in Chambas in Ciego de Ávila province. The brand belongs to The Island Rum Company, which was set up in Norway in 2012 with the aim of creating the first spiced Cuban rum. In 2019 the company formed a joint venture with Zerus, the commercial arm of Azcuba, Cuba's state sugar company.

The base is a Cuban dry rum aged two years. Coffee beans, cocoa and ají dulce, a sweet pepper, are macerated in it, with no artificial flavours or colours added. It carries only 9 grams of sugar per litre, which is low for a spiced rum, and it is bottled at 40%.

Expect cinnamon, nutmeg, roasted coffee and dark chocolate on the nose, then caramelised nuts, black tea and rich cacao on the palate, with a gentle warmth from the pepper and a long finish.

It can be sipped neat, and it makes a good rum Old Fashioned or a spiced Daiquiri. Go easy on the pours, as it is a full 40%.
