The story of Brancott Est Sauv Blanc

The Brancott Estate name comes from the winery just south of Blenheim in Marlborough, which opened in 1977 and makes the company's Marlborough wines, mostly Sauvignon Blanc. Since 2010 the winery's name has also been the brand name, chosen to avoid confusion with the American state of Montana, the label these wines carried before. The company behind it moved into Marlborough in 1973 and began exporting in 1980.

In the glass the Sauvignon Blanc is a pale straw with a green tinge. The nose is pink grapefruit, melon and gooseberry, and the palate adds honeydew melon and passionfruit. There is some ripe fruit sweetness, but it is held up by tight, fresh acidity, which keeps the wine tidy and balanced rather than sugary.

That brightness makes it a good partner for lighter food. Open it with a plate of oysters, a salad with goat's cheese and herbs, or a prawn and lemongrass stir fry. It also does well beside fish and chips, where the acidity cuts through the batter. Keep it cold and drink it young while the fruit is at its liveliest.
