The story of Brown Bros Cienna

Cienna is a red wine that doesn't fit the usual categories. It is light, slightly fizzy and low in alcohol, at 8 percent, with a vibrant ruby colour and a sweet berry flavour.

The name comes from the grape. Scientists at CSIRO, Australia's national science agency, crossed Spain's Sumoll with Cabernet Sauvignon in 1972, aiming for a quality red grape suited to Australian conditions. The result was Cienna, and Brown Brothers describes it as unique to the company. This bottle is made from it in North West Victoria.

The wine is unoaked and bottled soon after fermentation, which keeps it fresh and fruity. Expect red berry aromas with a hint of spice, then blueberry, raspberry and a little vanilla on the palate, finished with a light bubble.

Keep it in the fridge and serve it chilled. The winery suggests spicy Chinese hot pot, where the fruit sweetness works against the heat, or a meringue with mixed berries and raspberry coulis.
