The story of Cable Bay Cinders Vnyrd PinotN

Cable Bay began on Waiheke Island in 1998, when winemaker Neill Culley planted the first vines on the Church Bay slopes. This Pinot Noir comes from the other side of the operation, the Cinders Vineyard in Marlborough's Awatere Valley, which Cable Bay owns and manages itself.

Cinders was planted in 1996 on natural terraces stepping down to the Awatere River. It is certified organic by BioGro, and the vines are planted close, at 3333 per hectare, mostly to the Burgundian clones 777, 667 and 5. The subsoil is alluvial gravel with fossilised shells and river stones, and the coast is near enough to bring a savoury, salty edge.

In the cellar the fruit is fermented as whole berries and the wine is matured in French oak barrels, with only a portion of the oak new. The result is light and juicy rather than heavy, with cherry, thyme and the smell of rain on dry earth, forest floor notes and soft tannins. Serve it just cool with roast duck, a mushroom tart, pork terrine or a platter of cured meats.
