In 1891 it became the first North American spirit to receive a royal decree from Queen Victoria, and by 1940 it was sold in 90 countries. In 1952 a huge Canadian Club neon sign was lit in Times Square, where it stayed for 21 years. The brand is now owned by Suntory.
Prohibition sealed its reputation. When the United States went dry on 16 January 1920, Hiram Walker's distillery at Walkerville, beside Windsor, Ontario, sat just across the Detroit River from Detroit, and Canadian Club became the most smuggled whisky in America. Knockoff brands followed. It is a blended Canadian whisky aged in white oak barrels, with a light rye spice and vanilla sweetness that makes it easy to mix.
It is a good partner for soda, and the brand itself points to Canadian Club and soda, a plain long drink with a twist of lemon peel. The light rye spice also suits a Manhattan, or try it in an Old Fashioned with a dash of bitters and a strip of orange peel.
