Dark chocolateVanilla & caramelHoneyOakChivas Regal 18 Year Old, sold as Gold Signature, was created by Chivas Brothers' master blender Colin Scott and launched in 1997. His signature appears on the bottle in gold.
Unlike the 12 Year Old, every whisky in the blend is at least 18 years old, and it carries a high proportion of single malts alongside grain whisky. The main malts come from Pernod Ricard's Speyside distilleries, including Strathisla, which the brand calls its spiritual home. It is bottled at 40 per cent.
The nose runs to vanilla fudge, leather, nutty wood and dried fruit, with buttery toffee underneath. The palate is raisin fruitcake and fruit trifle with a lift of citrus zest, then dark chocolate and a little floral sweetness. The finish is long and spicy, with a wisp of mellow smoke.
It is a whisky for slow drinking, neat or over a large cube. Dried figs and apricots echo the fruit in the glass.
