The story of Church Rd HB Syrah

The first wine under the Church Road label was made between 1989 and 1991, soon after Montana bought the Hawke's Bay winery in 1988. Traditional French techniques, taught by Bordeaux winemakers, shaped those early vintages.

Today the winemakers are Chris Scott and Craig Thomas, supported by viticulturists Graham Bartleet and Claire Pinker. Hawke's Bay's warmer sites, such as the Bridge Pa Triangle, suit later ripening varieties like Syrah, and the winery counts bold, complex reds among the region's standouts.

This is the winery's regular Hawke's Bay Syrah, and it is a plush, friendly style. Ripe cherry, plum and violet notes are lifted by spicy, peppery nuances, the tannins are silky, and the finish is long.

Roast pork shoulder rubbed with fennel seed, sausages from the barbecue or a tomato and chorizo pasta are all easy matches. The softness of the tannins means it does not need a rich meal to hold it up.
