The story of Coruba Original

Coruba is a Jamaican dark rum with Swiss roots. The brand traces back to a firm founded in Basel in 1889 to import rum and cognac, and in 1929 the Rum Company Ltd was set up in Kingston to distil it in Jamaica. The brand changed hands several times through the twentieth century, and it now sits with Campari, which bought J. Wray & Nephew in 2012.

Coruba is a blend of pot still and column still rums, aged for at least two years in American oak barrels, with caramel added for colour and depth. The pot still rum brings the Jamaican character. Expect molasses, treacle and brown sugar up front, with orange peel, cinnamon, cloves and vanilla behind.

That dark, sweet profile makes it a natural for mixing. A tall rum and cola with a squeeze of lime is the classic use, and it also works in tiki drinks such as the Jungle Bird and in a rich, dark daiquiri. The 1 litre bottle suits a home bar that mixes often.
