The story of Curiosity Gin Ruby
Curiosity Gin is a small batch New Zealand gin made in a Christchurch urban distillery, The Spirits Workshop in Sydenham, and Ruby is the brand's most popular bottle. It is not a berry gin. The vivid pink colour comes from whole fresh rhubarb stalks from Otaki, which are infused into the gin and lightly sweetened.
The result tastes of fresh rhubarb, zesty and gently sweet, rather than of the red berries many pink gins lean on. Because the colour comes from the fruit, nothing artificial is needed to get that ruby shade, and it looks striking over ice.
It suits easy long drinks. A pink G&T is the obvious choice, with tonic and a slice of lime or a strip of orange peel. Ginger beer adds a spicy twist, soda keeps it light, and it also works in a gin fizz or a pink martini. A thin slice of fresh ginger or a short stalk of rhubarb makes a tidy garnish.
