A New Zealand craft gin infused with Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc grapes. Fresh and aromatic, with citrus, tropical fruit and a crisp finish.
CitrusDancing Sands is a small distillery in Tākaka, Golden Bay, run by Sarah and Ben, who started it in April 2016 with a 150 litre still and a leased building. Their first drinks went on sale that October, and the distillery has since collected awards for gins well outside the juniper mainstream.
The Sauvignon Blanc gin is one of its best known. The aim was to capture the flavour of the grape without simply tipping wine into gin. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is vacuum distilled with botanicals including mānuka leaf, almonds, cardamom and liquorice, then blended with Dancing Sands Dry Gin and bottled at 37.5 per cent. The low-temperature vacuum process keeps more of the wine's fresh character in the spirit.
In the glass it smells of passionfruit, lime zest and gooseberry over juniper and sweet almond, with green grape and tropical fruit on the palate and a touch of juniper dryness as it lingers. It won gold at the London Spirits Competition in 2022. Pour it over ice with a slice of lemon or lime, or top it with a premium tonic for a long drink that is almost spritz-like. A squeeze of fresh lime brings out the gooseberry.
