The story of Don Julio 1942 Tequila

Don Julio González was 17 when he began making tequila in 1942, in Atotonilco El Alto in the highlands of Jalisco. He built a distillery there and called it La Primavera, the springtime. This bottling takes the year as its name, and it was launched in 2002, sixty years after he started.

It is an añejo, rested for more than two years in recharged ex-bourbon American white oak barrels, with a listed age of two years and six months. The spirit comes from pot still No. 6, which fills only three barrels per distillation. In the glass it is pale straw gold, with cinnamon, sweet agave, vanilla and caramel on the nose. The palate runs to crème brûlée, toffee, dry nutty oak and roasted coffee, and the finish is long and dry.

The amber bottle is shaped like an agave leaf and closed with a natural cork. It is meant for slow sipping, neat or over one large cube of ice, rather than for mixing.
