The story of Guigal Cotes Du Rhone

Étienne Guigal spent about fifteen years working for Vidal-Fleury in Ampuis before he set up his own house there in 1946, and the family later bought Vidal-Fleury as well. Guigal's Côtes du Rhône Rouge is the southern Rhône red that sits at the start of the range.

It is a blend of about half Syrah, with Grenache making up around 40 percent and Mourvèdre the remaining 10. The vines average 25 years of age, yields are kept to about 40 hectolitres a hectare, and the soils are a patchwork of sediment, limestone, granite, pebbles and alluvium. After a long maceration on the skins, the wine spends 18 months in foudres, which are large oak vats and a much longer rest than most wines from the appellation get.

The colour is deep and glossy, the nose is fresh red berries and spice, and the palate is full, round and lively with smooth tannins and a long finish. Serve it at 16 to 18 degrees with cold cuts, roast meats, game birds or a plate of hard cheese. It can be kept for up to eight years.
