The story of Hardys VR Merlot

Thomas Hardy reached South Australia on 14 August 1850 aboard the British Empire. In 1853 he bought Bankside, beside the River Torrens near Adelaide, and his first vintage, made in 1857, was shipped to England in hogsheads. His family firm, Thomas Hardy and Sons, bought the Tintara vineyard at McLaren Vale around 1876, and the Hardys cellar door at Tintara is still called the home of Hardys.

VR stands for Varietal Range, wines made to show the true character of a single grape. This is the Merlot, in a one litre bottle. It is a medium-bodied red with ripe plum, dark cherry and blackcurrant, then vanilla and spicy oak, soft acidity and silky tannins. The finish is long, with fruit and toasty oak.

Pour it with a midweek dinner. It is an easy match for spaghetti bolognese, grilled meats or a pepperoni pizza.
