The Quiot family has been making wine in the southern Rhône since 1748. Today the 13th generation, Florence Quiot and her brother Jean-Baptiste, manage the family's estates across Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Rasteau, Ventoux and Provence, and more than 95 per cent of the wine leaves France. The name on this label is that of Jérôme Quiot, the name the family's vineyard company has long traded under.
Vacqueyras lies at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, on stony soils covered in rolled pebbles, and the village was the home of the 12th century troubadour Raimbaut de Vaqueiras. It was only granted its own appellation in 1990, after years as a Côtes du Rhône village. Grenache is the lead grape, with Syrah and Mourvèdre alongside, and the wines tend to carry more Syrah than neighbouring Gigondas, which can make the style feel a little cooler.
This bottle is full bodied and rich in dark fruit, with blackberry and plum, layered spice and a firm structure. Give it some air, then pour it with braised beef cheeks, slow cooked lamb shoulder or a bowl of beef and bean stew.
