The story of Lothlorien Medium Feijoa

Lothlorien is a feijoa winery in the Ahuroa Valley, between Puhoi and Makarau near Warkworth. Dale DeMeulemeester left Detroit for New Zealand in 1971, aged 20, to grow organic fruit, and he and his partner moved onto the Makarau property in 1972. They named it after Tolkien's woodland realm. The land gained BioGro organic certification in 1986, and after a home-brewed feijoa wine found a following, Lothlorien began making wine commercially in 1993.

Feijoas flower from December and are harvested from April to late May. Only ripe fruit that has dropped to the ground is used, never fruit taken from the tree, and it is processed quickly because feijoas do not keep well. The fruit is blended with organic apple, which adds body, lowers the acidity and rounds out the flavour. The wine is fined with pea protein, so it is vegan.

This is the medium style, with natural fruit sweetness balanced by fresh acidity. Chill it well and pour it with a cheese board, a mild blue cheese or a fruit salad, or have it on its own on a warm afternoon. It is made to be enjoyed while the fruit is fresh.
