Coconut · tropical · sweet finish
Malibu is a smooth coconut flavoured Caribbean rum. Sweet coconut and vanilla notes finish light and refreshing. Ideal for tropical cocktails.
Malibu was dreamed up in London in 1978 by three Britons: Peter Fleck, James Espey and Tom Jago, the spirits innovator who also created Baileys. They had been introduced to a locally made coconut flavoured rum in South Africa. The original name was Coco Rico, and it went on sale in 1980 in a white bottle showing two palm trees against a setting sun. Pernod Ricard owns it now.
The base is a white rum distilled from molasses, a by-product of sugar cane refining, with natural coconut flavouring added. For many years it was made at the West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados, and early labels named the Twelve Island Shipping Company, which handled distribution through the lower Antilles. It is now the world's number one coconut liqueur.
Coconut sits naturally in a piña colada, and a Mojito is another drink that suits it, with Malibu in place of white rum. For something simpler, build a tall serve with pineapple juice, plenty of ice and a squeeze of lime.
