Dark berriesOakWarm spiceMan O' War is a winery on the eastern end of Waiheke Island, in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf, owned by the Spencer family. Berridge Spencer bought the sheep and cattle station in the early 1980s, and the first vines went in during 1993 with help from neighbouring Goldwater Estate. The name comes from Captain Cook, who noted in 1769 that the kauri trees ashore would make ideal masts for Royal Navy warships.
Dreadnought is the winery's Syrah, named after the battleship HMS Dreadnought, and it is 100 per cent Syrah. Waiheke's maritime climate, with a long dry growing season and cooling sea breezes, gives a savoury, Northern Rhône leaning style. Expect dark cherry and mulberry, black olive, cracked pepper and wild herbs, with French oak in a supporting role and a long, slightly saline finish.
This is a red for food with some weight. The estate runs its own Angus beef and lamb farm, so slow roast lamb, scotch fillet or venison suit it well. Serve it at cool room temperature.
