The story of Matawhero Gewurztraminer

Gewürztraminer is one of the two flagship grapes at Matawhero in Gisborne, and Bill Irwin brought clonal material in directly from Europe at a time when New Zealand plantings were still mostly hybrids and bulk wine varieties. Kirsten and Richard Searle have owned the estate since 2008, and it marked its 50th year in 2025.

The wine is made in a clean, fruit driven way. The grapes are picked in the early morning, the juice is floated on arrival and fermented with an aromatic yeast, and fermentation is stopped at about seven grams of sugar per litre, so the wine tastes dry with a slight sweetness.

Lychee, jasmine, honeysuckle and Turkish delight are the main notes, with ginger and spice behind them. It is enjoyable young, and the winery says it will improve with four to five years in the cellar.

Serve it well chilled. The perfume and spice suit a Thai green curry, Vietnamese rice paper rolls or a plate of glazed ham.
