The story of McManis Chardonnay

McManis Family Vineyards is based in Ripon, in California's northern interior, where the family has farmed since 1938. Ron McManis, a fourth-generation farmer, and his wife Jamie built the winery in 1998 to make wines from their own estate vineyards. Five generations of the family are now involved, and they farm over 3,600 acres and follow the Lodi Rules for sustainable winegrowing.

The Chardonnay comes from the River Junction AVA, where the San Joaquin and Stanislaus rivers meet, about 35 miles south of Lodi. Ron proposed the appellation himself, it was approved in 2001, and McManis is the only commercial winery in it. The area is cooler than much of the Central Valley, its soils are young river sands and loams, and about 90 percent of its 1,300 acres is planted to Chardonnay.

In the cellar the wine is fermented cold in stainless steel, then aged in oak, with part of it going through malolactic fermentation. That gives pear, melon and peach with stone fruit, vanilla and a creamy, rounded texture. It goes well with roast chicken, prawns, creamy pasta and grilled sweetcorn, and it drinks easily on its own.
