Tiritiri Chardonnay comes from three sites within the Moutere Hills, including the young vines at Neudorf's own Rosie's Block. The wine from nose to palate is generous without ever being overblown. There's a warm familiarity of juicy, summer fruits intertwined with sea-air minerality. Todd's use of oak frames the wine guiding it gently, without demanding attention. All elements are laced together with a fine strand of acidity on the back palate, leaving a long, refreshing and moreish finish.

The story of Neudorf Tiritiri Chard

Most of Neudorf's Chardonnays come from a single named block. Tiritiri does the opposite: it is blended from three sites in the Moutere Hills near Nelson, including the younger vines at Rosie's Block. The soils are Moutere clay gravels with some Waimea alluvial soil in the mix, and several Chardonnay clones go into the blend, Mendoza among them.

Tim and Judy Finn founded Neudorf in 1978 and the estate is now certified organic. Winemaker Todd Stevens, who arrived in 2012, takes a hands-off line. Part of this wine ferments in French oak, partly with wild yeast, then rests on its lees to build texture. It goes through malolactic fermentation, is not fined, and only a small share of the oak is new.

The result is a relaxed, juicy style: summer stone fruit and citrus, a salty, rockpool minerality, and oak that sits quietly at the back. It is dry, and the acidity keeps it tidy. Pour it with roast chicken and fennel salad, tempura prawns with ponzu, or asparagus and lemon risotto.
