The story of Oyster Bay PinotG

Oyster Bay's Pinot Gris comes from Hawke's Bay rather than Marlborough, where the brand is best known. The brand belongs to Delegat's, a company whose roots go back to a vineyard founded in 1947 by Croatian emigrants Nikola and Vidosava Delegat. The Merlot and Pinot Gris are grown in Hawke's Bay, while the Sauvignon Blanc comes from Marlborough.

Hawke's Bay is New Zealand's oldest wine region, with wineries dating back to 1851, and Pinot Gris made up about 12 percent of its plantings in 2020. The vineyards are on raised, terraced sites, where cooler conditions let the fruit ripen slowly over a long season. In the winery a selection of yeasts is used, with lees stirring for softness and texture. There is no oak and no malolactic fermentation, which keeps the flavours clean.

Expect summer florals, subtle spice and fresh citrus, with apple, pear, lemon and white peach. It is medium bodied with crisp acidity. Chill it well and pour it with lightly spiced dishes, seafood or white meats.
