The story of Penfolds K/Hill Shiraz
Koonunga Hill takes its name from one of Penfolds' Barossa Valley vineyards, and the range has been going since 1976. The first wine was a Claret, and Penfolds says that original bottling is still drinking well and is a favourite at its re-corking clinics. A straight Shiraz joined the range in 2002.
It is a multi regional wine, in the Penfolds way. Shiraz from the warmer districts of South Australia is blended together, with the Barossa Valley always well represented. The 2018 drew on the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and Langhorne Creek, spent 10 months in oak and came in at 14.5 per cent alcohol.
The 2018 leaned toward bright red fruit rather than heavy black, with raspberry and strawberry, cranberry and red currant, then pink peppercorn, a violet floral note and a touch of aniseed. The texture was slippery and succulent, with fine, seamless tannins and a pastry-like softness from the oak.
That easy style makes it a good wine for the barbecue. Put it with grilled sausages, a lamb shoulder or a pizza with plenty of cured meat on top.
