The story of Penfolds Maxs Shiraz

Max's Shiraz is named for Max Schubert, the man who shaped Penfolds' modern red wines. Born in 1915 at Moculta, on the edge of the Barossa Valley, he joined Penfolds in 1931 as a messenger boy. In 1948 he became the company's first chief winemaker, a job he held until 1975. He is best known as the creator of Grange, and he also began the numbered Bin wines.

The wine that carries his name is a South Australian Shiraz in a fruit driven style. It is matured in American and French oak hogsheads, which adds a creamy richness without covering the fruit.

In the glass it is blackberry red with a plum rim. The nose carries ripe plums, red berries and exotic spice with a touch of cocoa, and the palate is soft and fresh, with plum, ripe cherry and gentle tannins.

It is made for the table rather than the cellar. Try it with a gourmet burger, sticky pork ribs or a beef rendang, all of which suit its soft tannins and ripe fruit.
