The story of Peroni Nastro Azzurro 500C

Peroni is an Italian brewery that began in 1846, when Francesco Peroni started brewing in Vigevano. A second brewery opened near Rome in 1864, and the company is now based in the capital. Nastro Azzurro, meaning blue ribbon, arrived in 1963. The name comes from the Blue Riband, the prize for the fastest Atlantic crossing, won in 1933 by the ocean liner Rex.

The beer did not take off straight away. The brewing team spent about two years reworking the recipe to make it less bitter and a little lower in alcohol. They also replaced a quarter of the grain with nostrano maize grown on the Po plain. The lager comes in at around 5 per cent, and today the brewery is owned by the Japanese group Asahi.

Inside the can is a pale golden lager with a crisp finish, gentle citrus and floral hop notes, and a touch of bread from the malt. This is the 500ml can, a single serve for the fridge. Pour it cold, around 3 to 5 degrees, with pizza, a seafood risotto, prosciutto or a fresh goat's cheese.
