Style

The story of Riverby Dry Riesling

Riesling is a major focus at Riverby Estate on Marlborough's Jacksons Road, and its Riesling vineyard is among the oldest in the region. The estate also became known in New Zealand for its sweet botrytis wines, with noble Rieslings that run to around 200 grams of sugar a litre.

This is the dry one. It is made in a mouthwatering dry style at 12% alcohol, and the 2024 held only about 4 grams of residual sugar a litre. That hint of sweetness softens the edge of the acidity without making the wine taste sweet.

The flavours are sherbet and lime over a steely core of citrus acidity, with a long, clear, sherbety finish. Older vintages have shown flinty, limey notes, and a decade of them tasted side by side was strikingly similar in style.

Salt and pepper squid, Thai fish cakes, a plate of oysters or a bowl of laksa all work with its brisk acidity. Serve it very cold.
