The story of Riverby Est Reserve Pinot Noir

Riverby Estate takes its name from the Opawa River and its tributaries, which once ran across the farm on Jacksons Road in Marlborough. The river was diverted in the 1930s, and the free-draining stony ground that resulted is what the vines now grow in. The same family has farmed the land for over a century, and Kevin Courtney runs the estate.

The Reserve is the more serious of its Pinot Noirs. It is matured for about a year in French oak barrels, and recent releases have sat at a moderate 12.5% alcohol. Its wines are made from individual parcels on a single vineyard.

The 2021 mixed a roasted chestnut depth with lifted, floral kirsch and rose on the nose, and the palate stayed juicy, with silky tannin and a firm, keen line of acidity.

Pair it with roast pork loin and prunes, a mushroom and thyme pie or grilled quail. Serve it lightly cool.
