The story of Riverby Estate Gruner Veltliner

Riverby Estate grows its grapes on Jacksons Road in Rapaura, Marlborough, on land the Matthews family has farmed for more than a century. The farm took its name from the Opawa River, which was diverted in the 1930s to stop Blenheim flooding, and that work created what became good grape growing land. The rainbow trout on the label stands for the fish that used to swim where the vines now grow.

The first vines went in during 1989, on ground that had been used for cropping and sheep. Grüner Veltliner came much later, planted in 2010 as clone A1-2, which makes Riverby one of the earlier Marlborough growers of the variety. It is a small part of a vineyard of about 70 hectares that carries eight varieties, mostly Sauvignon Blanc, on free draining soils that hold yields down naturally.

Grüner Veltliner is the most planted grape in Austria, and it is known for a peppery edge alongside citrus and peach. Riverby's wines have shown pear and peach fruit, limey citrus and a mineral thread, with a crisp, dry finish.

Pour it with grilled fish, roast chicken or a green salad. It also works with a fresh Asian dish, such as rice paper rolls packed with herbs.
