The story of Riverby Marl Chardonnay

Riverby Estate's vines were first planted in 1989, on Jacksons Road next door to Cloudy Bay in Marlborough. The Chardonnay and some of the Sauvignon Blanc still stand on their own roots, not on American rootstock.

The winemaking is classic. The Chardonnay is fermented in French oak, with roughly a quarter to a third of the barrels new, and then stays in oak for a further twelve months with regular lees stirring. The estate's style is one of restraint, never overtly tropical or oaky.

In the glass the wine is creamy and almondy, with vanilla, ripe pear, stone fruit and citrus. Some vintages show a flinty, mineral edge and a note of oatmeal. The acidity is ripe and well balanced, which stops the creamy texture from feeling heavy.

It is a good match for roast chicken with tarragon, crab on toast, or pasta with leeks and cream. Serve it cool, not ice cold.
