The story of Scapegrace Vodka
Scapegrace Vodka is a New Zealand vodka made from wheat. Its founders started making it after noticing that about 99 per cent of the vodka consumed in New Zealand is imported, and they wanted a local bottle for Kiwi drinkers. The vodka now sits in a range with Scapegrace gin, single malt whisky and ready to drinks.
The base is a wheat neutral grain spirit, blended with water that has been naturally filtered through deep layers of schist rock. The brand keeps that water's mineral character rather than stripping it out. The vodka is distilled just once, in a 1953 copper pot still, because the founders believe repeated distillation takes character away. In 2025 Scapegrace opened its own distillery on the shores of Lake Dunstan in Central Otago.
The result is smooth and creamy rather than sharp. Serve it ice cold and neat, or mix a long vodka soda with plenty of lime.
