The story of Makers Mark Bourbon

Maker's Mark is made at Loretto in Kentucky. Bill Samuels Sr. wanted to make a whisky he would enjoy drinking himself, and the first bottle was finished and hand-dipped in 1958. His wife Margie Samuels named the whisky and designed the bottle and label in 1953. The red wax seal on every bottle is hand-dipped to this day, and Margie is credited with the idea.

What sets it apart is the grain. Most bourbon uses rye as the secondary grain, but Maker's Mark uses soft red winter wheat instead, in a mash bill of 70 per cent corn, 16 per cent wheat and 14 per cent malted barley. The brand says this gives it a sweetness at the front of the palate. Difford's Guide says many regard it as the first Kentucky straight bourbon to market itself as a premium brand. It is bottled at 45 per cent alcohol by volume and is now owned by Suntory Global Spirits.

Difford's tasting notes mention honey, vanilla, maple syrup, bitter chocolate and nutmeg-spiced oak.

That sweetness makes it easy to sip neat or over a large ice cube. It also sits comfortably in the classics, like an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan, or simply with ginger ale and a wedge of lime.
