The story of Amarula Cream

Amarula is a South African cream liqueur made from the fruit of the marula tree, Sclerocarya birrea, a wild tree that grows across sub-Saharan Africa. The marula spirit it grew from was first produced in 1983, and the cream liqueur went on sale in 1989. It is made by the Southern Liqueur Company, part of Distell, which Heineken acquired in 2023.

The method is straightforward. The fruit is fermented and distilled, and the spirit is aged for about two years in French oak. It is then blended with fresh dairy cream and sugar and bottled at 17% alcohol by volume. The result is light brown to caramel in colour, with a creamy body and a smooth finish.

The elephant on the label is there because elephants eat the marula fruit. The brand co-funds the Amarula Elephant Research Programme at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, which began in 2002.

Serve it chilled over ice, where it tastes a little less sweet with a slightly earthy finish. It also goes into coffee or hot chocolate, over vanilla ice cream, or into a Don Pedro, which is Amarula blended with ice cream and cream.
