The story of Famous Grouse

The Famous Grouse began in Perth, Scotland, with the Gloag family business of grocers and wine merchants. The family firm had supplied wine for a banquet during Queen Victoria's 1842 visit to the city, and in 1896 Matthew Gloag, who lived from 1850 to 1912, created a blend he called The Grouse. In 1905 the company became a limited company and the whisky was renamed The Famous Grouse. The Gloag family owned it until 1970.

It is a blended Scotch, a marriage of malt and grain whiskies, bottled at 40 per cent. Highland Park is among the single malts in the blend. Expect toffee and malted barley on the nose, a slightly sweet, well balanced palate and spice that builds through a long finish. The red grouse on the label was first drawn by Gloag's daughter, and it is Scotland's national game bird.

It is easy to drink neat or with a little water, or over ice. For a longer drink, pour 50 ml over plenty of ice in a highball glass, top with sparkling apple juice and add a thin slice of apple.
