The story of Sebastiani Sonoma Zinf

Sebastiani has been making wine in Sonoma since 1904. Samuele Sebastiani arrived from Tuscany in 1895 and worked as a stonemason, quarrying the Sonoma hills for the cobblestones that paved San Francisco's streets. He saved to buy land and started the winery nine years later. It was the only winery in Sonoma County to keep operating through Prohibition, making small amounts of sacramental and medicinal wine.

The winery rates the cusp regions of Sonoma, such as Dry Creek, as the best homes for Zinfandel. This Sonoma County bottling is built on the grape, with a little Petite Sirah in recent vintages. It pours a deep ruby, with concentrated raspberry and white pepper on a bold, spicy and fruit-forward nose.

Zinfandel's ripe berry fruit and pepper are at home with smoky, salty food. Sticky barbecued pork ribs, a loaded burger, pepperoni pizza or a wedge of aged cheddar all suit it. Pour it into a large glass and give it a few minutes so the spice can open up.
