Dark berriesStone fruitWarm spiceOakLisa McGuigan, the fourth generation of a Hunter Valley winemaking family, launched her own label in 1997. She first called it Hermitage Road, after the road in Pokolbin where she grew up, and launched it in Sydney, at first selling cases from her home. When the French Hermitage appellation campaigned against the use of its name, she renamed the label Tempus Two, which is Latin for second time.
This is the Varietal Merlot. Merlot is thought to take its name from merle, the French word for blackbird, a reference to its dark colour. It ripens up to two weeks earlier than Cabernet Sauvignon and gives wines that are soft and fleshy with medium tannins.
That description fits this bottle. It is an elegant, soft Merlot with spiced fruit, generous weight and good length. The aroma is spice, plum and blueberry, and chocolate and blue fruit characters linger on a sweet oak finish.
Roast chicken, meatballs in tomato sauce or a mushroom risotto all suit it well. A board of mild cheddar and cured meats works equally well.
