A New Zealand craft gin distilled with selected botanicals, with balanced juniper, citrus and a clean finish.
The Source is a gin from Cardrona Distillery in the Cardrona Valley, on New Zealand's South Island between Wanaka and Queenstown. The distillery was set up by Desiree Whitaker, a former South Canterbury farmer who began researching distilling in 2011. Gin joined the whisky and vodka range because Ash Whitaker agreed to come and work at the distillery on the condition that it made gin.
The botanicals are juniper, coriander seed, angelica root, lemon and orange peel, and rosehip foraged locally in the valley. Cardrona runs both copper pot and column distillation. Head distiller Sarah Elsom leads a team of women distillers, and the gin took gold at the 2016 New York World Wine and Spirits Competition.
It is bottled at 47 per cent and is not chill filtered, so it can turn cloudy with ice or a splash of tonic. That is the oils staying in the glass. The nose is fresh pine and floral citrus. The palate is dry and smooth, with juniper freshness, zest, rosehip, a hint of vanilla and white pepper warmth, then a long citrusy finish.
The distillery suggests a classic premium tonic with grapefruit or rosemary. For a highball, use grapefruit tonic with a sprig of thyme. It is also smooth enough to sip over ice.
