The story of Two Hands Gnarly Dudes Shiraz

Two Hands was founded in September 1999 by Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz, who decided at a friend's engagement party to make their own wine for the world market. The first vintage followed in 2000, from 17 tonnes of fruit. Their cellar door sits at Marananga in the Barossa, in a run-down cottage beside Marananga Creek that they found in 2002, restored, and opened to the public in December 2003.

Gnarly Dudes is Barossa Valley Shiraz, named for the old, twisted vines it comes from. Shiraz was planted at Tanunda in the Barossa in 1847 and is still picked commercially today, and the valley is a source of some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world. Many parcels for this wine are fermented separately in open-top vessels of three to ten tonnes, with the cap pumped over three times a day at the peak of fermentation. The wine finishes malolactic in barrel, spends twelve months in French oak, and the parcels are blended just before bottling.

The wine is deep and dark, with blackberry, plum and spice, black pepper and a hint of dark chocolate. The tannins are firm. It wants richer food: braised beef cheek, lamb shanks, or a hard aged cheddar.
