The story of Wairau River S/Blanc

Every bottle of Wairau River wine is made only from fruit grown on the Rose family's own vineyards, fourteen of them across Marlborough's Wairau Valley. The story began with a single block called Home Block, and each variety is now planted on the site that suits it best. The soils include ancient river gravels and pockets of clay and silt, laid down by braided rivers over thousands of years.

Picking dates are set by flavour and natural acidity rather than sugar alone, and the fruit makes a short trip to the winery. Sustainability work runs through it, from lightweight 390 gram bottles, against an industry average of about 550 grams, to more than 30,000 riparian plants along the waterways.

The Sauvignon Blanc is bright and aromatic, with passionfruit, lemon, grapefruit and peach. It finishes dry and lively, with acidity that balances the ripe fruit.

The winery serves it at about 7 degrees and suggests fish and chips, a Thai chicken curry, oysters, or a salad of goat's cheese and roasted vegetables. It is made to be enjoyed young, within a year or two of release.
