This gin comes from the garden of a gin-making family. The Whitleys settled in rural England near Daresbury, and Johnny Neill built the recipe on childhood memories of visiting his grandparents' farm, where rhubarb was a family favourite. He started the Whitley Neill brand in 2005. Halewood bought it in 2009 and kept him on as brand ambassador, and since 2021 it has been distilled in London at the City of London Distillery.
Rhubarb essence gives a tart, crisp edge over an English gin base, and real ginger warms the finish. Juniper, coriander, cassia, orris root, angelica, liquorice, sweet orange and lemon sit behind them. The label states 43% alcohol, and the gin won silver with 90 points at the International Wine & Spirits Competition in 2020.
The brand's serve is a highball: 50 ml of gin over ice with 100 ml of premium tonic, garnished with ginger and lemon. Ginger ale also works as a mixer, and it leans into the ginger in the bottle.
