The story of Wychwood King Goblin Ruby

King Goblin is the stronger sibling of Hobgoblin, from Wychwood, a brewery that opened in 1983 in Witney, Oxfordshire. Hobgoblin began as a strong winter ale, and King Goblin takes that idea further as a 6.6% ruby ale with more weight and flavour.

The brand has changed hands over the years. Ian Rogers renamed the business Wychwood in 1990, Refresh UK bought it in 2002, Marston's took it on in 2008, and today it is owned by Carlsberg Britvic after Marston's brewing merged with Carlsberg UK in 2020. The Witney brewery itself closed in November 2023.

The recipe blends crystal and chocolate malts with Sovereign hops, which gives a deep ruby colour. Treacle toffee and dried fruit lead the aroma, then sweet caramel, coffee and earthy roasted malt carry through to a rich, fruity finish.

Serve it lightly chilled. It stands up to slow-braised oxtail, a wedge of mature cheddar, or a sticky toffee pudding. At this strength it is a beer to sip.
