The story of Yalumba Barossa Shiraz

Samuel's Collection was released in 2019, 170 years after Yalumba's founder, Samuel Smith, planted his first vines in the Barossa. It was Yalumba's inaugural range under that banner, marked by a clocktower icon on the label, and head of winemaking Louisa Rose made the wines in a youthful, fresh style that keeps the fruit concentration.

The Shiraz is 100% Barossa Valley fruit from several vineyards at heights between 300 and 1,500 feet, with vines averaging around 40 years old. The grapes sit on skins for one to three days before wild yeasts start the ferment, and the wine finishes in stainless steel with malolactic fermentation. It is then matured for 10 months in French, Hungarian and American oak, about 15 per cent of it new.

The result is full bodied and fleshy, with dark fruit, red spice, anise and ripe cherry, an even texture and a soft finish at 14.5% alcohol. Yalumba suggests a lamb roast with all the trimmings, and a sweet potato and black bean burger also works.
